Iran’s dilemma and ready-made accusations

Dr. Ahmed Sino

Demonstrations and protests are still going on all over Iran led by Iranian women of all communities including Persian, Baluchi, Azeri, Kurdish and Arab women against the background of the killing of the 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, by the Iranian morality police on charges of not adhering to the veil imposed by the Iranian authority. These demonstrations are still continuing in all regions until they spread to the capital, Tehran, to be joined by all universities, including high school students, markets and streets, including the bazaar. Rather, they extended to include workers and employees in many factories and institutions. The goals of the demonstrations widened to include social, legal and political issues since they spread in other states and nationalities inside Iran. Women’s protests and demonstrations united all Iranian communities in the face of the tyrannical religious authority surrounded by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Basij and Iranian police with different tasks and specializations, which did not hesitate to use violence and repression with a brutality that goes beyond imprisonment, killing, execution and hanging. The matter was exacerbated when they chanted for the fall of the dictator, who tried to calm the protests by declaring that his heart was torn over the murder of the Kurdish girl Amini, but to no avail. The demonstrations continued with greater momentum and the repression increased even more.

Iranian forces, including the IRGC, the Basij and others, mobilized on the borders with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) opposite Diyala Governorate along 50 km stretch. On September 28, Iran targeted the KRI claiming to hit the bases of the Iranian-Kurdish opposition. The Iranian attacks resulted in the killing of 13 civilians and the injury of several others in addition to causing damage to homes, residential complexes and civilian infrastructure. Iran launched 70 ballistic missiles and used 20 drones, but Iraqi response was poor that did not exceed the condemnation of the attacks. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) also just denounced the Iranian strikes.

Iranian ready-made accusations have become known, as is the case with all totalitarian regimes that say the West, the United States of America, the European Union, the KRG, the Iranian Kurdish opposition, and Saudi Arabia are behind the protests and demonstrations, which expressed their support for the internal movement in Iran.

Although some countries supported the protests, that did not reach the political and military level. When US President Joe Biden came out in public and affirmed his support for the protesters in Iran, and when his deputy Mrs. Kamala Harris and senior US officials led by Jake Sullivan, the US national security advisor, and Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, received activists of Iranian origin who are leading these protests, this means preparing for a declaration of war against Iran, according to Jordan-based al-Rai newspaper, and that the South Kurdistan (KRI) may be used as a base for the launch of American planes to strike Tehran and other Iranian cities.

Of course, Iran aims, behind ready-made accusations, to divert attention from the dire Iranian internal situation, especially from the demonstrations and protests spread everywhere in Iran. It aims to cause a rift between protesters and demonstrators by accusing the Iranian Kurds that they are working to separate and divide the Iranian nation. It is trying to export its internal and political crisis. Iran is also seeking with every effort to distract world public opinion from the protests by mobilizing on the borders with the KRI. Despite some demonstrations in the US and many European countries, interspersed with cutting braids and burning headscarves everywhere, but they are considered timid American and European support that does not rise to the required level, perhaps because of the Iranian nuclear file that is stuck so far and has not been completed. The American-European position may change later due to Iranian assistance to Russia in its war against Ukraine and the recent activity of Iranian drones there.
