Syrian economy in the wind

The Syrian conflict entered its twelfth year. It resulted in dire and devastating effects on the population and the economy which led to an acceleration of the pace of deterioration in the infrastructure, damage to property, the disintegration of social cohesion, the fragmentation of society, and the division of the region. This contributed to reducing the volume of economic activity to almost a quarter. The conflict also greatly contributed to the collapse of the economic activities, the deterioration of the standard of living of families, and the alarming increase in poverty rates, which reflected the loss of the ability to adapt. What made matters worse was the pandemic that ravaged the country and the lack of agricultural production as a result of the scarcity of rain and harsh climatic conditions.

The economy is witnessing a record decline as a result of this bloody and continuous conflict, and the placing of all resources and wealth at the service of the war machine which led to a rise in inflation rates to record levels at a time when the citizen’s income does not exceed $20. The citizen in Syria cannot meet the minimum living requirements. The situation has become like a snowball moving from bad to worse. The economic resources have become at the service of both Russia and Iran. The value of the Syrian pound decreased tens of times which is directly reflected in the prices of basic materials, which touched record numbers, not to mention the inflation that resulted from that and the state’s inability to control the rhythm of the economic balance and to exploit its citizens by imposing taxes that burdened the already dilapidated people. This is what prompted many people to displace and to emigrate. The people were forced to sell their properties and homes to get out of the country. The death of the people in suicide boats from time to time is nothing but the best example of the decline in the means of life in the country.

The ruling clique, who is governed by the agendas of foreign countries such as Russia and Turkey, has gone out of its way to implement their plans, hand over wealth and resources to them, and put them at their service according to more than decades of agreements. The ports and seaports are another story. People have been imprisoned in their country, and the regime is still betting on a military solution and refusing the political solutions that pass through the UN Resolution 2254 despite the people’s suffering from poverty, destitution, need, and deprivation. Add to this, the economic stagnation because there is no longer anything to support it and the dollar has become the master of the situation that reached 7.000 SYP against one US dollar. The situation becomes more and more deteriorated. The horizons were blocked, the life in the country of good things froze, and the economy has become in the wind.

There are no effective solutions to the economic crisis and the tragedy of the citizens, except with the intervention and agreement of the countries involved in the Syrian conflict.
